Exploring the Neapolitan Nativity

This week, the children at St Joseph’s were delighted to welcome two ladies from our parish, who came into school to share their beautiful knowledge and passion for the Neapolitan Nativity, also known in Italian as Il Presepe.

The children learned about the origins of the Nativity, beginning with St Francis of Assisi, who first brought the story of Jesus’ birth to life, and how this tradition later developed in Naples into something truly special. Unlike many Nativity scenes, the Neapolitan Presepe includes not only Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus, but also ordinary people going about their daily lives — bakers, shopkeepers, musicians and children — showing that Jesus came for everyone.

The visit was made even more meaningful through personal stories of growing up with the Presepe as a family tradition, helping the children to see how faith can be lived and shared at home as well as in church and school. The children were fascinated by the detail and symbolism and enjoyed spotting the many figures that make the scene feel alive.

To mark the visit, the children were each given a small figurine of Baby Jesus, reminding them that Christ is at the heart of Christmas and encouraging them to reflect on the joy, hope and love that His birth brings.

We are very grateful to our parish visitors for giving their time and for sharing such a rich and meaningful tradition with our school community. It was a truly special experience as we continue our Advent journey together.
