Our Catholic Life

“Let all that you do be done in love.”
1 Corinthians 16:14
At St Joseph’s, our Catholic faith shapes how we learn, pray, care for one another and serve our community. We help children recognise that they are loved by God and that their choices can bring hope, kindness and joy to others.
Our mission is:
“We, with Saint Joseph, follow the example of Jesus by growing in gratitude, humility, courage, and service.”
We warmly welcome children and families of all faiths and none. Everyone has a valued place in our school family.
Prayer and Liturgy
Prayer gives us time to be still, give thanks, ask questions and grow closer to God.
Children pray throughout the school day and take part in Celebrations of the Word: opportunities to listen to Scripture, reflect and respond through prayer and action.
Our weekly rhythm includes:
-
Monday: Whole-school Celebration of the Word, reflecting on Sunday’s Gospel.
-
Tuesday: Praise and Sing! — gathering for song, Scripture and prayer.
-
Wednesday: Celebration of the Word or Christian Meditation linked to our virtues.
-
Thursday: Prayer and worship planned and led by children, with support appropriate to their age.
-
Friday: Class celebration of learning or Celebration of the Word.
Families are warmly invited to join us for shared celebrations, including Praise and Sing! on Tuesdays, 9.00–9.15am. All are welcome, those of faith and none.
Encountering Jesus
We help children recognise God’s presence in their lives through prayer, Scripture, worship and the people around them.
Children explore different ways of praying, including quiet reflection, music, art, prayer journalling and the Rosary. These opportunities give them space to listen, wonder and respond to God in their own way.
Our school patron, St Joseph, and our class saints inspire us to follow Jesus. Feast days bring opportunities for prayer, creative reflection and joyful celebration. Following the example of St Carlo Acutis, our Year 6 children also spend time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Our RE Big Books capture children’s questions, reflections, prayers and creative responses as they grow in faith.
Learning and growing in faith
Through Lighting the Path, our Religious Education programme, children explore Scripture, Catholic beliefs and the life of the Church.
They are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, discuss ideas, consider different perspectives and express their understanding creatively. We help children connect their learning with their relationships, choices and responsibilities.
Visit our Religious Education page to learn more about the curriculum.
Children Leading and Serving
Children take an active role in the Catholic life of our school. As they grow in confidence and independence, they help plan and lead Celebrations of the Word, contribute to Masses and invite others to participate in prayer.
Our Mini Vinnies help lead Praise and Sing!, care for our outdoor Pray and Play prayer resources and encourage contributions to our Book of Kindness.
Through buddy relationships, older children help younger pupils feel welcome, supported and included. Visits to the parish Friendship Group offer opportunities to share games, conversations and companionship, building friendships across generations.
Faith in action
We put our faith into practice through everyday kindness, friendship and service.
Catholic Social Teaching helps children understand that every person has dignity, that we belong to one human family, and that we share responsibility for caring for others and our common home.
Our Mini Vinnies help our school community turn faith into action through Foodbank Fridays, charitable projects and practical support for others. Across school, children learn that small, thoughtful actions can make a difference.
Our Book of Kindness celebrates these actions. We encourage children to respond to the weekly SEND from Monday’s Celebration of the Word: an invitation to put the Gospel into practice. This might mean inviting someone to join a game, offering friendship to someone feeling lonely or making room for others. We also celebrate thoughtful acts of kindness beyond the weekly focus.
Our Mini Vinnies will also help classes explore Catholic Social Teaching and choose a charity that matters to them. Children will learn about its work, discuss how they can help and take shared responsibility for their support.
Through foodbank collections, fundraising, community projects and care for our surroundings, we seek to bring Christ’s love to others.
Visit our Mini Vinnies page to discover more about our projects and the charities we support.
Our school and parish family
We are blessed to have a close relationship with St Joseph’s Church and Fr Ben.
Through Mass, visits, prayer and shared celebrations, children experience belonging to a wider Church family. Fr Ben supports school life by celebrating Mass, spending time with classes and helping children deepen their understanding of faith.
Parents and carers are children’s first educators in faith. We value our partnership with families and work alongside the parish to support children as they grow, including preparation for First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation.
Together, our school and parish communities share opportunities for worship, friendship and service.
